Kliever: excellent captain

As a former NHLer, John Marks understandably has set high standards for his Winkler Flyers. He knows what it takes to make The Show.

And the first year Flyer head coach knows how important solid leadership is to ensure a winning hockey club.

After 27 games the Flyers have posted 14 wins and sit second in the Addision Division behind Selkirk Steelers. Marks’ goal this season is clear: “We want to win every time we put skates on,” he says, and having returning veterans like captain Troy Kliever can make this goal a definite possibility.

“He started wearing the ‘C’ last year...he’s the leader of our hockey team,” says Marks.

“He has the respect of his peers, so he’s able to take control of the room.”

The captain, who says he likes to be “the last person off the ice after warm-up,” works hard to set an example for his team mates, and is confident in his leadership abilities.

“I think I provide leadership on and off the ice,” says Kliever, whose outstanding play earned him the MJHL’s Sher-Wood Defenceman of the Month in October

“I work on keeping the guys calm and focused between periods and making sure everyone is ready to go before the game.”

Marks, who calls Kliever a “bright spot,” and the “go-to guy” on the team, is confident in the Captain’s ability to take his game to the next level this season and become a more rounded player, as he heads into his fourth year with the team.

“He’s certainly proven himself offensively, as you can see from his points,” explains Marks.

“I’d like his defensive play to be more consistent as we head farther into the season, but he definitely contributes offensively for us.”

The Flyers, who Marks says would like to “finish in first place and win the championship,” is definitely a team to watch this season, with Kliever leading the pack.
